Avish Khebrehzadeh - Time past hath been long

curated by Claudia Gioia
opening April 12 2016, 7:00 p.m.
from April 13 to May 27, 2016
From the 12th of April 2106, Fondazione VOLUME! hosts Time Past Hath Been Long, a work by Avish Khebrehzadeh. The work that the Iranian artist conceives for the spaces of the Foundation is the fulfillment of a research that has begun 20 years ago. The project has been inspired by the X century essay about the fixed stars written and hand-illustrated by the Persian astronomer Abd al-Rahmān al-Ṣūfi. The book recalls Ptolemy’s work and the most important astronomic researches of the classical age, with illustrations about every known constellation, making detailed references to their position and to their magnitude and apparent colour
Avish Khebrehzadeh has re-worked some her own drawings, some dating back to the 1990’s to the images of this historic manuscript- a connection between the East and the West - and re-elaborates them with her typical poetics.
In the Persian culture, images and illustrations have a fundamental role in the building of each form of expression. And so taking this aspect up with subtle irony, Avish Khebrehzadeh creates her own vision, giving life to new narratives and new relations and is able to describe re-codified times and places.
The personal universe of this artist who often depicts human forms directly connecting them with the animal and natural ones, now goes on toward celestial forms, spurring a deeper reflection on how the man perceives these phenomena.
A reflection about the meaning of time is an essential part of this project. From the scientific theory about the distance of the stars and the time it takes for their light to reach us, to a more philosophic conception arising from Saint Augustine theories about time. According to him, actually past, present and future events exist only inside our soul. So what we really perceive is what things leave inside us.
Time Past Hath Been Long is a path of drawings and animations calling the viewer to metaphorically enter a space and a time made of cosmic images. Pegasus- the horse son of the night, life and death bearer, with the divine breath inside its ears- is the channel between Earth and Sky.
